About the book

“Dnipro: An Entangled History of a European City” is the first synthesis of the history of Dnipro (until 2016 Dnipropetrovsk, until 1926 Katerynoslav) written in English. In it, Andrii Portnov situates one of Ukraine’s most important cities in a broader regional, national, and transnational context and explores the connections between global processes and everyday routines of urban life. Throughout its history, Dnipro has been called “new Athens,” “Ukrainian Manchester,” “Brezhnev’s capital,” and “the heart of Ukraine.” Conceived as a critical, entangled history of multicultural space, the book seeks a new analytical language to overcome the trappings of national and imperial historiography.
